Prevention and Procedures for Kidney Failure

When we are kids, we don't  need to worry about our health and lifestyle as someone is always with us to care and protect. But now we are adults, gone are the carefree days of not keeping track of your lifestyle. You have only one body and you have to keep it healthy. Taking preventive tips is best to keep your body stay on. But some diseases are not easy to predict and prevent, kidney failure is one of them. Let us understand what is kidney failure?

What is Kidney Failure?
Kidney Failure is a serious matter. It is also known as renal failure or renal insufficiency in which the kidneys fail to filter metabolic wastes of blood. If  the kidneys fail, survival depends on either dialysis or a kidney transplant. Kidney failures are determined by a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, which is the rate at which blood is filtered in the glomeruli of the kidney. The condition is detected by a decrease in urine production or presence of waste products in the blood. There are two main forms of kidney failures:

  • acute kidney injury, which is reversible with proper treatment
  • chronic kidney disease, which if often not reversible.
Symptoms of kidney failure:
At the early stage, symptoms are unnoticeable. When kidneys fail to filter  waste products of your body, waste accumulates in your body and blood, a condition called azotaemia. If this disease progresses in this way, the symptoms become noticeable which includes:
  • Vomiting,
  • Weight loss,
  • Most frequent urination
  • Blood in urine
  • Bone damage,
  • Itching
  • Muscle cramps
  • Weakness
  • Abnormal heart rhythms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Appetite loss
  • Dizziness
  • Dry skin
  • Darken skin

Know your risks for Kidney diseases:
High blood glucose levels can  damage the blood vessels of your body, including the blood vessels of kidneys that do the job of filtration of waste products in your body. Both kidneys are directly affected by diabetes and high blood pressure. If you have any them of them, then ask yourself, if they are under control? If not, then visit your Doctor for regular checkup including urine test, blood test etc as prescribed by your doctor.

Choose right treatment for kidney failure:
Some type of kidney diseases can be treated but chronic kidney disease has no cure. If your kidneys can't keep up with waste and fluid clearance on their own, at that point, you need dialysis or a kidney transplant.

  • Dialysis. Dialysis artificially removes waste products and extra fluid from your blood when your kidneys can no longer do this. Since dialysis is a lifelong treatment, many doctors advise their patients to go for a kidney transplant.
  • Kidney transplant. A kidney transplant involves surgically placing a healthy kidney from a donor into your body. Kidney transplant to a patient can be made from a live donor or a cadaver donor. Live donors could be siblings, other relatives and family members who are likely to have a better tissue match with that of the patient, hence, reducing the scope of rejection of the kidney by the body. But, often a lot of patients do not have a relative who is suitable enough to be a donor. In that case, while they remain on dialysis, they can be placed on a waiting list for a cadaver transplant.
For kidney transplant, visit Manipal Hospital of Bangalore. At Manipal hospital, there are a variety of highly qualified and experienced nephrologists and transplant surgeons. The Department of kidney Transplants offers quality services to their patients with the best treatment.
